How to Write Everything: An Evening with Rick Cleveland
Rick Cleveland, writer on such shows as Mad Men, Six Feet Under, and West Wing, will be coming to Praxis for a public talk at SFU Harbour Centre on the evening of May 27.
Rick Cleveland is the ultimate transmedia navigator. Starting as a playwright and improv comedian, he’s expanded his repertoire to include major feature films as well as some of the best TV drama of the past decade. This diversity is reflected in his training at both the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshop and The Second City, incubator for many of North America’s best comedians.
Rick will show clips from his work and talk about how he juggles a remarkable variety of writing roles. Some highlights include:
- Writing and/or Producing The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Mad Men, and the new hit Showtime series Nurse Jackie. He’s won an Emmy and two WGA awards, and has just been nominated for a third.
- Writing The Runaway Jury (2005), based on the John Grisham novel, with John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and Rachel Weisz. He’s written two other features, Topa Topa Bluffs (2002) and Jerry and Tom ((1998).
- Creating the hit one-man show My Buddy Bill, which he performed at several comedy festivals and adapted as a special for Comedy Central network. Rick recently worked with Robert Redford on a sequel to Redford's classic political satire The Candidate for HBO, and he is currently developing feature film projects for both Will Ferrell and Fred Armisen.
